City says it’s there to support Montrealers who lose affordable housing on moving day

"For those of you who still haven’t found a place to live, it’s important, don’t wait until July 1st and dial right now 311," says Benoit Dorais, from the City of Montreal, as the Plante administration prepares for moving day. Swidda Rassy reports.

The City of Montreal is reminding Montrealers that it is there to support families who lose affordable housing on July 1st – known as moving day.

Officials say they have put in place services and measures to support those in need with the help of partners across the city.

Those services include help to find new affordable housing, as well as offering temporary housing and storage options.

They remind Montrealers that calling 311 is the best place to start to get help.

“For those who still haven’t found a place to live, don’t wait until July 1 to call 311. We’ll direct you to the right resources and support you through this difficult time. We’re ready to help people who have lost their homes and are struggling to find new ones, and you shouldn’t hesitate to call on the services that are in place,” said Benoit Dorais, Vice-Chairman of the Executive Committee and responsible for Housing, Real Estate Strategy and Legal Affairs.

“Every situation is different, but they all have one thing in common: they’re going through a difficult and stressful time. Fortunately, we can count on an empathetic team that is at the heart of a large network of partners and has many tools at its disposal to help these households find a roof over their heads. People in need should contact 311 without delay,” added Vincent Brossard, Director of Applications Management, Affordable Housing and Rent Supplements at the Office municipal d’habitation de Montréal (OMHM).

The City of Montreal has increased the OMHM’s budget from $1.5 million in 2019 to $3.5 million this year in order to help support vulnerable households. Their service include a phoneline to help find new housing as well as temporary housing. They also have an online tool to find housing.
