Montreal’s Multicultural Festival celebrates cultural diversity

A festival dedicated to bringing people together celebrated its second edition Saturday in Montreal.

The second annual Multicultural Festival took place on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day at Jardins Gamelin.

The goal of the festival was to celebrate diversity and unity in Montreal.

“Together as one, that is the message for today,” said Kidel Reid, the president of the Multicultural and Diversity Project.”

The festival featured multiple musical acts and was scheduled to end with a performance by Haitian group Bel Vyb.

The organizers of the event say that it’s more important now than ever to embrace our cultural differences.

“We can go back to last year when Mr. (Francois) Legault said he doesn’t promote multiculturalism, there’s one culture… when you look at that message, it marginalizes people,” said Reid.

“To me Quebec means diversity,” added Veronica Romito, a community worker with the Multicultural and Diversity Project. “We are here today celebrating on Saint-Jean-Baptiste with the Multicultural and Diversity Project because we want to showcase how Quebec really is a diverse place.”
