Businessman Vince Guzzo has been charged with criminal harassment, the Director of Criminal and Penal Prosecutions (DPCP) confirmed Tuesday morning.

Guzzo was charged with engaging in criminal harassment against a person between November 2022 and June 2023.

He was also charged for allegedly failing to comply with a condition not to communicate, directly or indirectly, with that person.

Guzzo was arrested over the weekend. He was detained briefly and appeared on Sunday in court. He pled not guilty.

In a statement released Tuesday afternoon, he says it’s “a private family matter.”

“The current issue is between myself, my wife and our lawyers. Consequently, no information will be disseminated concerning the course and content of the divorce proceedings underway. I would like to stress that my arrest has been highly unsettling, not only for me but more importantly, for our three children who have been living with me since November 2022 and who were present, in my home, at the time of my arrest.”

“As for the charges, they are contested and vigorously denied. In the meantime, I would like my privacy, and especially that of our children, to be respected during this trying time.”

Guzzo, the president and CEO of Cinémas Guzzo, is a key player in the cinema industry in Quebec. The entrepreneur also appears on the CBC show “Dragon’s Den.”

He once considered running for the leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, but ultimately never did.
