Italian-Australian comedian Joe Avati is coming back to Montreal and Laval to deliver his hilarious insights on how times have changed, for better or worse, since he grew up as a teenager in the 80s. He’s on a tour that includes multiple stops in Ontario and Saskatchewan as well.
His observations on universal themes like the interaction between different generations, the love of food or daily life in an immigrant family are the reasons why audiences around the world are able to identify with him around the world – and right here in Montreal.

His new show, “When I Was Your Age” takes the comic’s reputation for pointing out the humour in generational and cultural differences one step further by putting a hilarious spin on the complexities of modern-day parenting and the minefield of cancel culture.
“See the Italian in us wants to discipline our children the way we got disciplined,” says Avati. “But the other half doesn’t want to have child services knocking on my door.”
Or his observations on the typical Italian tradition of a wedding cash gift, known in Italian as a “busta.”
“Don’t make the fatal mistake that a lot of people make,” Avati says. “When you go to an ethnic wedding, never seal the envelope. If the food is s**t, take out 50 bucks.”
Fun for all ages and all ethnic backgrounds
Avati’s show is for the whole family, and suitable for anyone 12 years and older. Comparisons between the generations will be inevitable.
The comedian promises that his brand new show “When I Was Your Age” will not disappoint his Canadian fans. With several dates scheduled across the country, the show is set for July 21 in Laval and July 22 in Montreal.
And while the show is definitely about being Italian, Avati says it isn’t just about being Italian.
“I address the current issues of today,” he says, “the political correctness, how the world is sort of going.” Topics everyone can get a chuckle out of, regardless of their ethnic background.
