A team of researchers from the Université de Montréal (UdeM), the Jewish General Hospital and Defence Therapeutics, a Quebec-based biotechnology company specialized in the development of vaccines, are collaborating on a joint study to develop a new vaccine against cancers.
The project is being funded by the Quebec government and Defence Therapeutics.
“This is an innovative immunotherapy strategy that could be applied to the treatment of a wide range of cancers and improve the lives of many patients,” said Véronique Dugas, Vice President of Scientific Affairs at CQDM, a biopharmaceutical research consortium, in a press release.
The goal is to identify gene targets after a cancer diagnosis and produce a custom-made vaccine for the patient, to activate an immune response to fight cancer.
“By conducting collaborative research, new therapeutic strategies and new vaccines can be developed. We will continue to support researchers and organizations that work tirelessly to find innovative treatments to improve Quebecers’ quality of life,” said Pierre Fitzgibbon, Minister of Economy, Innovation and Energy, Minister Responsible for Regional Economic Development and Minister Responsible for the Metropolis and the Montreal Region, in the same press release.
The vaccines will be tested in the lab before moving on to clinical trial in a few years.
