SAAQ will reuse photo already on file for driver’s licence renewal

By The Canadian Press

Drivers who need to renew their licence by the end of 2023 will not have to go in person to the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

The SAAQ announced on Wednesday it will reuse the photos that are already in the driver’s file to produce the new licence.

Drivers whose license expires between June 1, 2023 and December 31, 2023 will receive their licence by mail automatically, along with their payment notice.

“The Société invites those who already had an appointment for a photo-taking session to cancel this appointment,” the SAAQ said in a press release.

Drivers whose license expires as of January 2024 are not affected by this measure, said Geneviève Côté, a spokesperson for the SAAQ. She says the SAAQ “continues to monitor the situation closely” to see if other dates should be added.

“We are currently able to reuse the photos of customers as part of the renewal of their driving licence to avoid them having to travel,” she said. “For the moment, we are doing it for customers who are affected by the dates that are mentioned.

“This is one of the measures that have recently been put in place to be able to better control traffic in our various branches.”
