A large portion of the construction work on the Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine tunnel has been put on hold after workers discovered mold and used their right to refuse to work.
The mold was found in the two kilometer long service corridor – a narrow tube inside the tunnel used for potential evacuations among other things.
There is currently no construction work being done inside the corridor and the tunnel.
Some hundred employees that were working on the tunnel have been assigned to other duties.
It’s still too early to say how this may effect the deadline of the project – which is set to be completed in 2025.
This does not affect traffic circulating in the tunnel.
Transport Quebec says a specialized firm is currently investigating the situation and will make recommendations in order for work to resume safely.
Quebec’s workplace safety board will then determine when it safe for workers to go back.
