Construction site road accidents up 258% in last 5 years: CNESST

“I'm not surprised at all,” said Sean Roach, a Montrealer, about the stretch of Sainte-Catherine street between Stanley and Mansfield that will be closed to vehicle traffic for the next two years due to construction. Gareth Madoc-Jones reports.

Accidents on Quebec road construction sites have increased by 258 per cent between 2017 and 2022, according to figures by the province’s workplace safety board (CNESST).

The number growing from 60 work place accidents to 215. Among them, 18 are accidents where a vehicle directly hit a piece of equipment or a traffic controller.

The Quebec government recently launched a campaign urging motorists to slow down and be careful while driving near worksites.

In July, two road traffic signallers were hit on a worksite in Pointe-aux-Trembles in a hit-and-run. One of them died of his injuries. The driver later turned himself into police, but no charges have been laid at this time.

Quebec’s Transport Minister is expected to announce in the coming weeks a plan to help protect workers on construction sites of the province’s roads.

The CNESST has also increased its presence on construction sites to identify risks and dangers.
