37,000 tickets handed out in Quebec school zones in 2022

By The Canadian Press

Municipal police officers in Quebec issued at least 37,000 tickets to motorists for non-compliance with road safety in school zones in 2022.

The data was revealed year by the Quebec association of police chiefs (ADPQ) Tuesday, coinciding with the start of the new school year.

The group says the number is only the “tip of the iceberg”.

The ADPQ explains it only counted the statements of offence issued during targeted operations, which are carried out during certain periods of the year, so it doesn’t encompass all the interventions by municipal police forces.

“The statistics are conservative. There are many more tickets being given across Quebec,” said ADPQ president Pierre Brochet at a press conference.

The 36,979 fines recorded by his association and spread over a dozen regions “reveal there are a lot of drivers who do not respect the regulations in school zones,” said Brochet.

“It represents 3,000 tickets per month. And I repeat, it is still a major effort by all the police, despite the fact that this figure is greatly underestimated.”

These statistics are in addition to those of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) made public last June by the ADPQ, according to which 71 per cent of drivers exceed the speed limits near parks and schools.
