A South Asian man who was facing deportation has been granted temporary residence.
On Monday, CityNews shared the story of Mr. S as family and supporters began calling on federal immigration minister Marc Miller to stop his deportation.
Solidarity Across Borders, an organization that advocates for the rights of refugees and immigrants, held an emergency rally at Miller’s office, pressing for Mr. S to stay in the country until a spousal sponsorship application made with his wife, Fatima, has been processed.
Those calls continued through Thursday — the day he was supposed to be deported.

Before noon Thursday Mr. S was allegedly taken to the Montreal airport.
However, by Friday afternoon, the Solidarity Across Borders learned that the deportation would no longer be happening.

Mr. S’s lawyer is asking for an urgent detention review, following which he should be released because he has a temporary residency permit.
At this time, it is unclear when the review will be scheduled.
