Heat warning continues for Montreal area, severe thunderstorm watch in effect

Heat warning continued for Montreal and surrounding areas on Thursday and it was already feeling like 33 degrees by 8:30 a.m. – then 39 degrees by 4 p.m.

A severe thunderstorm warning is also in effect. “Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain late this afternoon and this evening. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Water-related activities may be unsafe due to violent and sudden gusts of wind over bodies of water,” said Environment Canada.

The city breaking a record on Wednesday as the heat wave continues. Making it the hottest September 6 on record since 1983.

“The warm and humid air mass will remain until Friday. Combined temperature and humidity values will give humidex values between 35 and 40 over a number of areas in the afternoon {today],” added the weather agency.

As the heat wave continues, they warn that, “the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors. Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place. Reduce your heat risk. Schedule outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day. Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.”

For Friday, mainly cloudy and a 60 per cent chance of showers. High of 26, but 34 with the humidex.

Cloudy skies for Saturday and Sunday with highs of 26 and 23.

Closer to seasonal norms next week, with rain on Monday and a cooler 18 degrees.
