A new linguistic breakdown of students attending Quebec CEGEPs and universities was published Tuesday.

The number of students attending French-language universities in the province rose 31.5 per cent between 2002 and 2021.

The number of students attending English-language universities increased 35.6 per cent in that same time frame.

The data was revealed in a new study by the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF).

It showed the proportion of students attending an English university in Montreal climbed from 37.6 per cent in 2002 to 40.3 per cent in 2021.

Among mother-tongue French speakers studying at Quebec universities, the proportion attending a French-language university remained stable at around 93 per cent since 2002.

And the number of foreign students at universities in the province rose from just under 16,000 in 2002 to more than 47,000 in 2021.
