A 49-year-old man is dead after being stabbed in Westmount on Monday night at the corner of Atwater and Sainte-Catherine Street West.

This is considered the 29th homicide of the year in Montreal.

Police (SPVM) say the victim may have been experiencing homelessness, as he was found near an encampment in an alleyway and the site of the attack is also close to a homeless shelter near Cabot Square.

A call was made to 911 reporting that an individual had been injured around 11:50 p.m.

When SPVM officers arrived on the scene, they found the man with upper body injuries and he was taken to hospital in critical condition – where he later died.

A security perimeter was set up to allow investigators to analyze the scene. Witnesses are also being met by police.

No arrests have been made so far.

The investigation is ongoing.
