Montreal’s metro Blue line extension delayed

The extension of the metro’s Blue line is expected to be delayed another year – to 2030.

Preparatory work has begun on the worksite, however, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) says more time will be necessary to complete the project after discussions with potential builders.

“Following the discussion process with bidders, the timetable was extended to be fine-tuned around market realities. As a result, the Blue line extension will not be put into operation before 2030. The scenario for putting the line extension into operation will be confirmed when the next contracts have been awarded and the final terms of the project have been approved by the Conseil des ministers,” a statement on the STM’s website reads.

The project is slated to cost $6.4 billion and has been in hit with delays since the planning phase in 2013.

The STM says the project office still intends to begin major excavation work in 2024 and the project is in its execution phase.

Once ready the 5.8 km Blue line extension will run along Jean-Talon and end at the Galeries d’Anjou.
