Montrealers can vote among 31 projects for the city – the most popular ones will be built

Green alleyways in LaSalle. A new skate park in Montreal North. Free wi-fi stations in the Plateau. Fruit trees and vegetable gardens in Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

Those are just some of the projects Montrealers have a chance to vote into existence.

As part of the second edition of the city’s “participatory budget,” $30 million is being set aside for the projects that will receive the most votes.

Montrealers over the age of 12 have until Oct. 29 to vote among the 31 finalist projects covering three themes: youth, equity and security. The winning ideas will be revealed in November.

The citizen-led project began with 650 suggestions from the public last fall. Selected projects were required to serve the common good and be sustainable in the long term.

Some of the projects include: a network of green alleys and corridors; closed circuits for cyclists; covered shelters for bicycles; skate parks, soccer fields and basketball courts; a community kitchen; redesigning public parks; and skating rinks.

Also proposed was the planting of new “tiny forests” in seven additional locations – an extension of the project that received the most votes in the inaugural participatory budget.

The city says at least $5 million will be allocated to projects that “meet the needs of young people with the aim of improving their living environments and preventing violence.”
