Sun Youth donating hundreds of turkeys to families in need ahead of Thanksgiving

“A lot of people need food,” says Ernie Rosa, director of emergency services at Sun Youth, where 500 turkeys were donated to families days before Thanksgiving.

More and more Montreal families are in need this Thanksgiving weekend as the cost of living and prices at the grocery store continue to rise.

“A lot of people need food, and it’s not just people under the poverty line it’s also working families that need a little help to get through,” said Ernie Rosa, Director of Emergency Services at Sun Youth.

Sun Youth says they service on average about 2,000 families a month and they’re seeing record numbers of community members who need help with the rising cost of living.

During the holiday season that number can rise to 5,000 monthly.

“We’ve been in business for 70 years and the last fall and winter was really really tough for us because there was so much demand. Our waiting room is always full. And we’re starting to see it again and it’s early we’re only beginning of October,” said Rosa.

CityNews spoke to a working mother who says with the current grocery prices and her reduced income while on maternity leave, adding the help she receives from sun youth means the world.

“I just recently gave birth to my baby and every month I come for food because in the grocery store the food prices are through the roof – the surplus is too high. Sun Youth with vegetables and stuff like that weekly helps a lot for families in the community,” explained Jeliah, working mother.

“Honestly it’s really a big deal to me that we have people like you guys that the government set in motion to help people in society. It doesn’t matter the level that you are, they help you around the clock and these are the small things that adds value to everyone’s daily life.”

CMA CGM Foundation will be donating another 500 turkeys to those in need through Moisson Montreal.

“We understand how challenging it is to live today. Prices everywhere going up, so it’s a way to recognize and give back,” explained Thiago Campos, General Manager of CMA CGM.
