Ottawa pledges $150M for Port of Montreal Contrecœur expansion project

By News Staff

The federal government is pledging $150 million towards the Port of Montreal’s expansion project northeast of the city.

The project would see a new container terminal for the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) built in Contrecoeur – about 70 kilometres from Montreal – along the Saint-Lawrence River.

The new terminal is slated to include a 675-metre dock; a rail network connecting to existing CN tracks; road access; a container handling yard; and operations and administrative buildings.

Federal Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez made the announcement in Montreal Tuesday. The investment is being made through the National Trade Corridors Fund.

Rodriguez says the investment would increase the Port of Montreal’s container capacity by 55 per cent while improving the country’s supply chain.

Ottawa estimates the expansion will generate up to $140 million in revenue annually.

The Montreal Port Authority will act as primary contractor for the project, which includes dock construction and dredging work.
