Superheroes surprise young patients at Montreal’s Sainte-Justine hospital

“To honour the real superheroes who are the children at Sainte-Justine," explained Julie Veilleux, of CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation, as superheroes rappelled down the hospital to surprise young patients and caregivers. Tina Tenneriello reports.

Superheroes rappelled down Sainte-Justine Hospital Wednesday morning to surprise children there as Halloween approaches.

Black panther, Spiderman, Captain America, and more – chatted with the young patients via radios to protect their immune systems – while volunteers distributed Halloween treats inside.

“To honour the real superheroes who are the children who are at Sainte-Justine as well as their caregivers,” explained Julie Veilleux, the Director of Communications at the CHU Sainte-Justine Foundation.

It was rope access technicians from Atwill-Morin who dressed up and repelled down the building. The initiative coming from them, said Matthew Atwill-Morin, the President of Groupe Atwill-Morin inc.

“They’re the ones that approached us with this project and since we know quite a few people at Sainte-Justine through the multiple events that we’ve done – we managed to make it happen,” Atwill-Morin explained.

The event took place ahead of the Rallye de Sainte-Justine on October 18, 2023 which brings together the business community with a goal of raising $475,000 for the hospital.

“This is wonderful testimonial of how the business community in Quebec rallies around the Sainte-Justine cause and the cause of children’s health. This is a way to put smiles on children’s faces and to promote the event which is taking place next week,” Veilleux said.

“The smiles of the kids, getting them to be able to change their mindset a little bit and see something exciting – that’s what the reward is,” added Atwill-Morin.
