Arson in Montreal’s Mile End forces residents out of their homes, no injuries reported

By The Canadian Press

MONTREAL – An arson attack early Monday damaged a commercial and residential building on Bernard Avenue in Montreal’s Mile End district.

There were no injuries, but the Montreal police force (SPVM) say six residents on an upper floor of the building had to be evacuated.

Authorities were alerted at 3:45 a.m. by a call to 911. The SPVM was informed that a person had been seen throwing an incendiary object into the ground-floor restaurant before fleeing the scene.

No arrests have been made so far.

After firefighters from the Montreal fire department had extinguished the blaze, a security perimeter was set up by SPVM police near the intersection of de l’Esplanade Avenue.

Investigators will meet with witnesses, the restaurant owner and search for surveillance cameras in the hope of obtaining images that could help in their investigation.
