Downtown Montreal called coolest neighbourhood in Canada

“It is the coolest city,” says one Montrealer as the city's downtown core is ranked the coolest neighbourhood in Canada, according to a Time Out survey. Swidda Rassy reports.

Downtown Montreal is the coolest neighbourhood in Canada and among the coolest in the world.

That’s according to Time Out, which created the ranking based on a survey of thousands of travellers, locals and city editors.

The various neighbourhoods were ranked based on community and social aspects, access to green spaces, and street life.

Downtown Montreal was listed as the 36th best neighbourhood in the world, but took the top spot in Canada, beating out the Annex in Toronto, which was the only other Canadian neighbourhood to make the list in 38th.

Despite the construction, which can be frustrating for residents, downtown Montreal was praised for its many international events and festivals, like the Jazz Fest or parties during the Grand Prix weekend.

“Free activities and initiatives have been created to bring the community together – in summer, a giant chess board, outdoor art installations and circus acts; in winter, a gigantic illuminated skating rink, disco bumper cars and food pop-ups,” the Time Out entry on Montreal reads.

“With a population of creatives and young professionals, along with some of the best new (and highest) rooftops, hotels and restaurants in town, downtown is the place to be.”

Top spots on the list include:

  • Laureles in Medellín, Colombia (1st)
  • Smithfield in Dublin, Ireland (2nd)
  • Carabanchel in Madrid, Spain (3rd)
  • Havnen in Copenhagen, Denmark (4th)
  • Sheung Wan in Hong Kong (5th)

Other notable spots include Mid-City in New Orleans (7th); Baltic Triangle in Liverpool (11th); Sea Point in Cape Town, South Africa (21st); and Ponsonby in Auckland, New Zealand (33rd).
