The West Island YMCA held a drive-thru food drive on Sunday in Pointe-Claire to help Montreal families in need and stock up food banks.

Amid rising costs of living and grocery prices, some food banks are struggling with low inventory, calling on the generosity of Montrealers to ensure no family goes hungry.

Around 300 families rely weekly on the On Rock Community Services, located on Gouin Boulevard in Pierrefonds. They say stockpiles that used to last six months are only lasting three.

“We’re the same as everybody else, we’re struggling, we’re hitting the ground all the time trying to find to places to get food, new resources,” said Kim Reid, the founder of On Rock. “The price of food, it creates a situation where even people donating food are donating less. So it’s a challenge.”

The West Island Mission is also struggling to serve 350 families and approximately 1,000 people a month — mostly single adults and seniors.
