Quebec strengthening security in detention facilities

By The Canadian Press

Quebec wants to fight more effectively against smuggling, escape attempts and inmate violence in its detention facilities.

Public Security Minister François Bonnardel was at the Établissement de détention de Québec on Tuesday morning to announce investments of $35.8 million over five years.

Those funds had already been announced in the last budget. They are in addition to the $9.2 million earmarked in the Five-Year Infrastructure Plan (PQI).

The money will be used to acquire specialized security equipment, such as drone-detection radar systems and body-scanning detectors for searching incarcerated people.

It will also buy devices for searching visitors and staff in detention facilities, and secure more outdoor yards, Bonnardel explained.

In January, correctional officers at the Établissement de détention de Québec also made a major seizure of drugs and illicit items.

“With the evolution of technology and the stratagems developed by criminal organizations to continue their activities within the walls of our prisons, it was imperative to invest in strengthening security measures in the network,” said Bonnardel in a press release Tuesday.

“The sums announced today are necessary to ensure the safety and peace of mind of all Quebecers, as well as to support the essential and demanding work of correctional services staff.”
