Doctor-assisted deaths in Quebec jump 46% in one year

By News Staff

The number of Quebecers who died with medical assistance in 2022 jumped more than any other Canadian province compared to the previous year.

That’s according to Health Canada’s most recent annual report on medical assistance in dying (MAID).

Last year, 4,801 Quebec residents opted for a doctor-assisted death – a 46 per cent increase from 2021.

Roughly 6.6 per cent of all deaths in Quebec in 2022 were from MAID – the highest in the country. British Columbia was second at 5.5 per cent.

Overall, 13,241 Canadians chose doctor-assisted death last year – a 31 per cent increase from 2021 to 2022.

Quebec established a MAID law in 2014, two years before it was legalized at the federal level.

The total number of medically assisted deaths in Canada since that federal legislation in 2016 is 44,958.
