16 Montreal metro stations vandalized with posters linked to Israel-Hamas war

More than a dozen Montreal metro stations were plastered overnight with posters linked to the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

A Société de transport de Montréal (STM) spokesperson told CityNews the posters – some bearing the words “genocide in Palestine, Canada complicit” – were placed at 16 stations.

“We deplore this type of act of vandalism,” the STM said.

The posters were found at metro stations on the orange, blue and green lines, including Jean-Talon, Villa-Maria, Mont-Royal, Pie-IX, Du Parc and Acadie.

The Montreal transit authority says maintenance workers were deployed Tuesday morning to remove the posters.

“Our security team is checking and the SPVM is investigating,” they said.

A Montreal police spokesperson told CityNews they were called around 5 a.m. No suspects have been arrested.

The SPVM hate crime unit was initially tasked with the investigation but the file was later transferred to the force’s metro section. It is being investigated as mischief.

SPVM spokesperson Sabrina Gauthier specified that decision was made because it was not a crime against a person and there was no call for violence, but rather mischief on a public space.

Several incidents have been reported in Montreal in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.

Last week, incendiary devices damaged a synagogue and a Federation CJA office in the West Island; two Jewish schools were targeted by gunfire; and a heated altercation took place at Concordia University between two different groups.
