Montreal Alouettes super fan bakes food for team every week

“They have their favourites,” said Heather Lowengren, a Montreal Alouettes superfan, when speaking about the food she has baked for the team each week leading up to this year’s Grey Cup match on Sunday. Gareth Madoc-Jones reports.

The Montreal Alouettes have a chance to win Canada’s biggest football prize this Sunday, the Grey Cup. One of their biggest fans has been part of their recipe for success.

Heather Lowengren has been delivering her baked goods to the team every week at their practices for more than 10 years. Some of the things she bakes are cupcakes, blueberry muffins, oatmeal cookies, shortbread cookies, and salted caramel brownies.

“I started making cupcakes and I brought it to the players not thinking I didn’t make enough, but you know and then they started winning every game after,” explained Lowengren.

“They have their favourites, Danny Maciocia likes the carrot cake with the walnut and the cream cheese filling and so does Anthony Calvillo.”

This tradition started when Lowengren delivered cupcakes to former Alouette placekicker Sean Whyte on his birthday because he was away from home. The team went on a winning streak after that, so Lowengren continued baking for the players and hasn’t stopped.

“They told me I couldn’t stop doing the baking and the cupcakes and I haven’t stopped since and that was like you know maybe 12-15 years ago so that’s what I do.”

Lowengren has been a fan of the Alouettes since the late sixties. She also recently lost her husband Jerry after 51 years of marriage but has received lots of support and love from the players since then, including a signed helmet.

“These are shirts that were given to me by the players and they’re all signed,” said Lowengren.

“When I went to the game, they wanted to, they centered me in the middle, all the players. Jason Moss had a helmet that he gave to me and told me how much I meant to them that we were a family. They were a part of my family.”

Despite this difficult time, Lowengren is confident her favourite team will win the Grey Cup this Sunday in Hamilton against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

“I am praying and I’m predicting a win. Not a big win, maybe a three-point win, but that nail-biter, you know, field goal is not good. We need to be ahead of them at halftime.”
