Lanes closed due to crack detected on Île-aux-Tourtes bridge

By The Canadian Press

Congestion is expected on Monday on the Île-aux-Tourtes bridge, which links Montreal’s West Island and Vaudreuil-Soulanges in the Montérégie region, as only two lanes per direction are available.

A new crack was detected on the Montreal-bound side of the bridge, according to Quebec’s Transport Ministry, in a press release issued Friday evening.

The discovery of this new crack means that one lane of traffic will be closed indefinitely.

The two-lane-per-direction configuration, put in place over the weekend, was maintained on Monday for analysis.

“The ministry is already carrying out interventions to reinforce the infrastructure and keep it safe until the new bridge opens, including concrete work this weekend,” the ministry said.

The Île-aux-Tourtes bridge has been in service since 1965. The Transport Ministry says that “traffic on the bridge remains safe” and that, in case of doubt, it will not hesitate to prohibit access to the bridge.
