Members of Montreal’s South Asian community came together on Friday to celebrate Nuit Diwali.

The festivities took place at Maison Florenca in Lachine where community members gathered to celebrate the Festival of Lights.

“Indians all over the world, just a few weeks ago, celebrated the Festival of Lights, and I thought to myself, why not share it with all Montrealers?” said Rupali Bhowmick, the event organizer.

The event showcased Diwali traditions through various cultural performances, interactive activities, and Indian cuisine.

“It is an evening of amazing food, incredible decor, and fantastic entertainment. We’re really expecting people to come in and celebrate this amazing festival,” said Bhowmick.

Diwali, celebrated as a national holiday across India on November 12th, is marked by socializing and exchanging gifts with family and friends. Many light earthen oil lamps or candles, and fireworks are set off as part of the celebrations.

“It is the celebration of the triumph of light over darkness,” said Bhowmick.

“It’s just to spread happiness, joy, togetherness, it’s kind of to forgive and forget and start new relationships and just be happy,” said Sanjay Patel, who attended Nuit Diwali.

“Even though we’re far from India, we still embrace all of our culture and festivities,” said Seetha Lauture, who also attended the event.

“What I really liked about it is that everybody just sits together and starts talking to each other, it’s very like family style,” said Mabel Palomino, who experienced her first Diwali festival at Nuit Diwali.

Nuit Diwali is not only a celebration of Diwali but also the relaunch of the Pragati Network, a platform aimed at bringing together South Asians living in Montreal and Canada. According to Bhowmick, Pragati Media was established in 1985 by her father and served the South Asian demographic in Montreal.

“I think that this is how we can really celebrate and practice the spirit of diversity and inclusion,” said Bhowmick.

“We are diverse, and we are multicultural,” added Bhowmick. “There are so many stories of divisions, but I think right now, especially now, it’s time to come together and unite.”
