The Royal Canadian Legion in Roxboro hosted a Christmas craft fair over the weekend to raise money as it continues to work towards full restoration from last year’s fire.

The Legion in the West Island is raising funds to buy new appliances.

Martin Bruyere, president of RCL branch 234 (General Vanier), says a new stove and fridge would complete the restoration of their kitchen – an essential step to hosting dinners and other social events with the community again.

“Without your support, legions will not survive, and Remembrance Day will slowly fade into history. And that’s something we don’t want,” Bruyere told CityNews Sunday.

To that end, the legion invited local craft vendors – as well as Santa Claus and Ms. Claus – to its holiday fair. Cozy quilts, holiday mugs, soaps, candles, knitted hats and mittens were just some of the items up for grabs.

“We always try to support and give back to our community as much as we can,” said a holiday shopper at the craft fair.

“For the craft vendors, it’s one of their best seasons, obviously,” added Bruyere. “For us, despite the fact that we reopened our main floor, we’re still working on the basement where our kitchen is.”

More than a year has passed since a fire destroyed the Roxboro legion’s building Oct. 25, 2022. The legion reopened this August, though more work is needed.
