A police officer was seriously injured overnight when he was struck by a car while chasing a suspect on foot on Highway 15 in Laval.

He was transported to hospital and according to the latest information, he is expected to survive.

According to the Laval police force (SPL) at around 2:30 a.m., police officers noticed a car with its headlights off traveling on Highway 15 southbound with its rear window smashed.

Officers followed the vehicle, without initiating a formal pursuit, according to the SPL, until the suspect behind the wheel pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway, near the Médéric-Martin bridge, and fled on foot.

It appears that he ran into the northbound lanes. There, he was intercepted by police.

However, in doing so, a police officer was hit by a car.

The driver of this car was also arrested on suspicion of being under the influence of alcohol.

A section of Highway 15 was closed to traffic in both directions for a few hours. Southbound lanes were reopened around 5:30 a.m., but northbound traffic was not restored until several hours later, after police had completed their investigation.
