“Oh my god, it’s like part of history. Like they’re going to talk about it in the history books, and I’m gonna tell my grandkids, I was here,” said one Montrealer CityNews spoke to.

Montreal’s mayor Valérie Plante was also among the crowd paying tribute to Tremblay.

“I’m so happy to be here tonight. You know, we’re going to be more than 15,000 people, Montrealers, and I’m sure people from other places in Quebec to pay tribute to Karl Tremblay, who left way too early, but the music will remain,” said Plante.

“Well, it’s ‘Les Etoiles Filantes.’ I think it’s just something that I used to listen a lot with the kids as well. So yeah, that’s a precious one,” Plante responded when asked about her favourite song.

CityNews spoke to more fans who were at the ceremony, who said Les Cowboys Fringants are a “huge pillar of Quebec music”.

“I went maybe to five of their shows, so I think they’re pretty. They mean a lot to me and I was really sad when I heard the news and I saw this, I was pretty sad,” said one Montrealer.

Another saying, “They’re like poets of Quebec, right? Their lyrics really get to you. I don’t know who’s going to replace them. I don’t know if they’re ever going to sing without him. We’ll see. But we’re going to keep listening to them.”
