Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante received emergency care Tuesday morning, after suffering a medical scare while responding to questions at a press conference.

While delivering her first response to English questions at city hall just before 11:30 a.m., she paused, went silent and then quickly sat down on the platform.

Her staff immediately went to her side, as she remained on the ground. After a few minutes, the press conference was ended and she was escorted out of the area.

Paramedics were at the back of city hall soon after, treating Plante. She was not taken to hospital.

She posted to social media Tuesday afternoon saying she felt uneasy, but was doing better after being assessed by a medical team.

She said as a preventive measure and to fully get back into shape, she’ll be reducing the pace of her activities in the coming days. Plante will miss Ville-Marie borough council meeting Tuesday evening, but says her colleagues will be filling in.

“I feel blessed to be so well surrounded, it warms my heart,” she said.

The city’s official opposition leader, Aref Salem, posted to social media on Tuesday afternoon saying: “My thoughts are with the mayor following the discomfort she suffered this morning during her press conference. I hope you get back into shape quickly.”
