Mayor Plante provides update on her health after medical scare during a press conference

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante was absent Monday during city council’s vote for the 2024 budget, almost a week after suffering a medical scare and feeling unwell during a press conference.

Plante took to social media on Monday, thanking her colleagues that are taking over for her during the vote.

“I have to continue to slow down the pace of my activities, although fortunately I feel better and better,” she wrote. “I will be back by your side as quickly as possible.”

Last Tuesday, while delivering her first response to English questions at city hall, Plante paused, went silent and then quickly sat down on the platform.

Her staff immediately went to her side, as she remained on the ground. After a few minutes, the press conference was ended and she was escorted out of the area.

Paramedics were at the back of city hall soon after, and came inside to treat Plante. She was not taken to hospital.

The cause of the illness has not been publicly revealed, and the mayor had said as a preventive measure and to fully get back into shape, she’ll be reducing the pace of her activities in the short-term.
