The major crimes investigation department of the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is investigating a fire that occurred on Sunday in Saint-Jérôme, in the Laurentians, that resulted in a woman losing her life.

Around 7 a.m. Sunday, firefighters were called to attend to a building located on Saint-Georges Street, or Route 117, which was engulfed in flames. It was a commercial building with accommodation upstairs.

“After many hours of fighting the blaze, around 2:30 p.m., they discovered an inanimate person,” said Sgt. Audrey-Anne Bilodeau, spokesperson for the SQ.

The victim was transported to a hospital while he was in critical condition. She was pronounced dead a little later. Her age and identity are not yet known.

“The building could be declared a total loss given the extent of the damage,” said Ms. Bilodeau.

The cause of the fire was still unknown Sunday evening. SQ investigators, as well as fire scene technicians, are on scene Monday to shed light on the circumstances of this event.
