Laval police: fewer gun discharges in 2023 compared to previous years

By The Canadian Press

Laval police (SPL) says that the number of incidents leading to firearm discharges has dropped compared to 2022 and 2021.

There were 13 discharge incidents in 2023, compared to 24 the previous year and 43 in 2021.

The SPL says it’s thanks to Project Paradoxe, which comprises five intervention sectors that provide comprehensive coverage of firearms-related events.

Jean-François Rousselle, assistant director of the SPL’s criminal investigation sector, believes that the strategy of the project has produced encouraging results related to urban gun-related violence.

He says the drop in the number of incidents over the last two years is proof that the presence of police officers is having a impact on the ground.

In 2023, 57 firearms were seized and 30 individuals were arrested in Laval.
