Montreal-East teachers union within FAE accepts deal with Quebec

By Jean-Philippe Denoncourt, The Canadian Press

Early Thursday, the Syndicat de l’enseignement de la Pointe-de-l’Île (SEPÎ) in Montreal announced that 58.5 per cent of its members had voted in favour of accepting the agreement between the Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE) and the Quebec government.

The union represents 4,384 teachers at the Centre de services scolaires de la Pointe-de-l’Île in the eastern part of the city.

The FAE is recommending that the agreement be signed, but some union leaders do not intend to follow suit.

FAE union members in the Montreal and Laval school service centres are expected to vote on the deal Thursday evening.

The deal would provide salary increases of up to 24 per cent over five years.

The FAE brings together nine unions representing more than 66,500 teachers, mainly in pre-school, primary, secondary, prison, vocational training and adult education.
