Montrealers will need to dress warmly if they are headed outside Friday, as an Arctic air mass is making it the coldest day of the winter.

The weather will be mainly sunny, with a high of -13°C in the city, but the wind chill will feel more like -22°C.

“I’m feeling fine but the weather is really cold,” one Montrealer said.

The mercury is expected to reach -17°C as a low on Friday, but overnight it will be -25°C with the wind chill.

The normal high for this time in January about -6°C, with an average low of -15°C.

“Honestly, I just like doubled up a hundred layers. I’m trying to get used to it by walking instead of taking the metro, but it’s not working,” said one student on their way to class.

Parts of northern Quebec reached -40°C overnight into Friday, including in Abitibi.

Daytime highs will stay in the minus double digits through the weekend. Periods of light snow are expected Saturday morning, and the wind chill will make it feel like -23°C.

“I’m from South Korea originally, so this reminds me when I was young,” explained Mehyun Van Der Borgh, visiting Montreal from the Netherlands. “This whole thing about being cold makes me like missing that childhood so it’s really nice for me.”

Sunday is expected to bring back seasonal norms with sun and a high of -11°C.

Daytime highs are expected to be around zero on Monday with a mix of sun and cloud. Milder temperatures are on the way for next week, with periods of snow and highs of zero once again on Wednesday and Thursday.
