A man was reunited with his children after his vehicle was stolen from a Montreal North commercial parking lot – with the kids in the backseat.

It happened Thursday around 6:50 p.m., after the father had left his three-year-old and 11-year-old inside of the Hyundai Santa Fe SUV on Léger Street unattended.

After a call to 911, several police officers arrived on the scene and conducted a perimeter sweep. A few minutes later, according to Montreal Police (SPVM), the children were found safe and sound near their house.

“It was just an opportunity for the car theft or the suspect that saw maybe that the vehicle that was rolling at the time and that the doors were unlocked,” said SPVM spokesperson Jean-Pierre Brabant. “So I think so, was an opportunity for a suspect to take that vehicle and leave with it.”

Police report that the suspect dropped the children off close to the scene of the theft, so the kids were able to walk to their home – which was near the location.

“Don’t leave your kids in the car by themselves, take them inside with you. It will save you trouble in the future,” said Brabant.

The SPVM investigation is still ongoing and no arrests have been made.
