Two more FAE teachers’ unions reject agreement in principle with Quebec

By News Staff

Two more unions rejected the agreement in principle between the Fédération autonome de l’enseignement (FAE) and the Quebec government on Thursday night.

The Syndicat de l’enseignement des Seigneuries (SES), which represents 700 teachers in Vaudreuil-Soulanges voted against the agreement in principle by 58 per cent.

There were nearly 700 people who attended the meeting last night when they discussed the agreement.

Soon after, the Syndicat de l’enseignement de la région de Québec (SERQ) refused the agreement, by 60 per cent.

The SERQ represents nearly 7,000 teachers with the Centre de services scolaire de la Capitale and the Centre services scolaire des Premières-Seigneuries.

So far, the vote is split with four FAE-affiliated unions in favour and four against, with only one group left – the Syndicat de l’enseignement de la Haute-Yamaska (SEHY).

Within the past week, the Syndicat de l’enseignement de la région de Laval and the Syndicat de l’enseignement des Basses-Laurentides (SEBL) rejected the offer by 68 and 72 per cent.

The four unions who have accepted the agreement so far are the Alliance des professeur(e)s de Montréal, the Syndicat de l’enseignement de l’Outaouais, the Syndicat de l’enseignement de la Pointe-de-l’Île in Montreal (SEPÎ) and the Syndicat de l’enseignement de l’ouest de Montréal (SEOM).

The SEHY is the only union who hasn’t voted yet and they will be meeting on Jan. 31.

To be ratified, the agreement in principle must be accepted by a majority of the FAE’s nine unions, as well as by a majority of its 66,500 members.
