Two dead in Pointe-aux-Trembles fire

Two people died after an apartment fire in Pointe-aux-Trembles.

A call was made to 911 around 4:30 a.m. Friday to report the fire on Saint-Jean-Baptiste Blvd., near the intersection of de la Gauchetière.

Around 70 Montreal firefighters were dispatched to the scene and the building was evacuated.

On arrival, they found three people injured and they were transported to hospital in critical condition.

A 58-year-old man was confirmed to have succumbed to his injuries in the morning and then a 35-year-old woman was confirmed to have died by afternoon.

A third victim, whose age has not been released, remains in critical condition.

The cause of the blaze is unknown for now, but Montreal police are investigating as there are fatalities involved.

A large security perimeter has been erected around the scene. Saint-Jean-Baptiste Blvd. closed between René-Lévesque Blvd. and Victoria Street.
