QS launches youth initiative to promote Quebec independence

By News Staff

Québec solidaire (QS) says it’s launching a campaign on Friday entitled, Nouveau Québec to convince the new generation to embrace sovereignty.

The initiative will be spearheaded by the Mercier MNA Ruba Ghazal who explains that, as a Quebecer of Palestinian origin, she understands what it feels like to be uprooted and to have one’s language and culture threatened.

So, she says she wants to help pass on her love of French and Quebec culture.

A Léger poll conducted earlier this month showed that support for sovereignty among respondents stood around 35 per cent.

As for voting intentions, they give 32 per cent of support to the Parti Québécois (PQ), which is promoting independence, 25 per cent would vote with Coalition avenir Québec (CAQ), 16 per cent to QS and 15 per cent to the Liberal Party (PLQ).

Québec solidaire says it believes that the road to independence lies in rallying young people because they didn’t experience the first two referendums, in 1980 and 1995.

Ghazal says that Quebec cannot afford to lose a third referendum.

Party co-spokesperson Émilise Lessard-Therrien will also be taking part in the Nouveau Québec campaign.

According to her view, the independence project is emancipatory and will resonate with a generation that has grown up a Quebec with no grand societal plan.

Lessard-Therrien explains that Quebec independence is the key to better social justice, environmental progress, and self-determination.

QS intends to share its independence message via a new website. (https://www.nouveauquebec.info/)

They will also campaign on the ground, organize events, conferences and set up poster campaigns to promote the independence project.
