53 stolen vehicles recovered in container search at Port of Montreal

By The Canadian Press

Authorities say they made a major seizure Tuesday in the fight against car theft.

A search of 26 containers in the Port of Montreal led to the seizure of 53 stolen vehicles that were intended to be sent overseas.

This seizure comes a few days after the summit organized by the Liberal government in Ottawa on the increase in car thefts, in which the government pledged $28 million to help fight against the export of stolen vehicles abroad – mainly in Africa and the Middle East.

The federal government estimates approximately 90,000 cars are stolen each year across Canada, resulting in costs of approximately $1 billion for policyholders and taxpayers.
