Two women dead, third injured after Vaudreuil-Dorion stabbing; man arrested

Sûreté du Québec (SQ) says two women are dead after they were stabbed in an attack in a Vaudreuil-Dorion condo building, west of Montreal.

A 44-year old male suspect was arrested on the scene and will appear in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield court on Friday to face charges, including possibly second-degree murder charges.

A third victim, also a woman, was taken to hospital and was in critical condition, according SQ spokesperson Sgt. Catherine Bernard – but her condition improved by Friday morning and she was stable.

“At around 11:50 a.m., police officers from the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Est MRC were called to an apartment building on Émile Bouchard Street in Vaudreuil-Dorion, where [there had been] a stabbing attack on several victims,” write SQ in a press release.

When police arrived, three people were found with serious injuries. Two women, a 53-year-old and a 68-year-old were pronounced dead at the scene.

SQ confirmed on Friday morning that the 68-year-old woman was the suspect’s mother.

The third victim, a 70-year-old woman had been taken to hospital with serious injuries – but is now in stable condition.

“The suspect, a 44-year-old man, was arrested by police at the scene. He was taken to hospital with minor injuries and will be interviewed by investigators,” said the press release on Thursday afternoon.

Bernard says the suspect was known to police. Reports are that he had been in court as recently as last week and suffered from mental health issues.

Investigators from the Service des enquêtes sur les crimes contre la personne, accompanied by the Service d’identité judiciaire, were on the scene Thursday and still on Friday morning to analyze the scene, interview witnesses and gather as much information as possible about the circumstances surrounding this event.

Bernard said many people live in the residential complex, and police would be meeting with them.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante posted on social media Thursday, “What horrible news. All my thoughts are with the community of the city of Vaudreuil-Dorion.”
