“It is very important to have this event because kids need that motivation,” said Denburk Reid, Founder of Montreal Community Cares Foundation about holding an in-person ceremony after three years of doing it online. Miguel Fowke-Quintas reports.

The sixth annual Honour Roll Breakfast took place on Sunday in Saint-Henri.

The event honours students in Grades 4 to 9 who have demonstrated academic excellence or significant improvement.

Organizers say it was important to hold the event in person after three years of having it over Zoom during the pandemic, in order to bring children and families together.

“Human connection is very important,” said Denburk Reid, the founder of Montreal Community Cares Foundation. “It’s very important that the kids are not necessarily on their screens but they are having some interactions with adults and with their peers and it’s very important to have this event because kids need that motivation.”

The Montreal Community Cares Foundation, which organized the meal, says the event looks to highlight and encourage academic success and improvement, and to provide students with information and exposure about what awaits them further along in their studies.

“At first I was shocked because my mum said my brother was getting an award, to keep it a secret, and I’m very happy for my brother because he’s getting a chance to shine, and because I’ve already received a lot of awards,” said honour roll student Adriana Jackson. “And when my mum said that I would also be receiving an award, I was very shocked.”
