Dollarama reaches $2.5M settlement in class-action lawsuit

By News Staff

A class-action lawsuit settlement of $2.5 million was reached with Dollarama in Quebec Superior Court over hidden environmental fees in its stores.

The lawsuit was filed in May 2023 over products subject to an Environmental Handling Fee (EHF), including batteries, electronics, light bulbs or battery-powered toys.

It claimed that the company never included certain fees in the advertised prices, making the total higher than what was displayed.

Under the terms of the agreement, anyone who purchased batteries, lightbulbs, toys and other items that were subject to the EHF in Quebec between Dec. 11, 2019 and July 4, 2023, or elsewhere in Canada between May 29, 2021 and July 4, 2023, is entitled to compensation.

Dollarama agreed to pay those eligible in the form of gift cards of up to $15 per person after they submit a claim.

Anyone who wishes to submit a claim can do so by first inputting their email on this website by April 5, 2024.
