Woman stabbed in Montreal North, ex-partner charged

By The Canadian Press

A woman is in hospital after a stabbing overnight in Montreal North.

Montreal Police (SPVM) explain that despite the seriousness of her condition, the 46-year-old is expected to survive her injuries.

The court has issued a publication ban on the victim’s name for this case. The suspect’s name cannot be divulged due to this, as it could lead to identifying the woman.

A 38-year-old man was arrested not long after it happened – and is said to be the woman’s ex-partner.

He appeared Monday afternoon at the Montreal courthouse on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, criminal harassment and breach of conditions.

He is said to have been arrested twice before for domestic violence since last summer, including just last month. He was released with a series of conditions, including not to come within 200 metres of his ex’s home.

The SPVM reports that the victim was seen by officers in the Montreal North borough on a sidewalk on Henri-Bourassa Blvd., near Lacordaire Blvd., around midnight – while she was heading on foot towards the police station to ask for help.

She had significant injuries to her upper body.

It seems the man entered her apartment on Gervais Ave., near Industriel Blvd., and allegedly attacked her in her bedroom.

When officers arrived at the apartment, the suspect had already fled, but was arrested shortly after in the area.

The 38-year-old had also been arrested for another case of domestic violence last June. He was charged with assault causing bodily harm, uttering death threats and breaking and entering with intent to commit a crime.

It is not known, however, whether the complainant in this case is the same woman he allegedly tried to kill overnight.
