28 confirmed measles cases across Quebec: health ministry

The number of confirmed measles cases in Quebec was up to 28 Tuesday afternoon, according to the latest data from the provincial government.

It represented an increase of seven cases from Friday.

The new cases are believed to be in the Mauricie et Centre-du-Québec, Laurentides, Montérégie, or Lanaudière regions. There are also now five confirmed measles cases in Laval.

The number of cases in Montreal (15) remained unchanged.

Several of the recent locations of exposure include hospitals, clinics, pharmacies and grocery stores.

Measles is highly contagious; the virus can remain active for up to two hours in a room even after an infected person has left. It also has a long incubation period – usually between 10 and 14 days. Its symptoms include fever, cough and a bumpy, red rash.
