The social committee for Muslim women known as “Ummati” and the Muslim students’ association at McGill University teamed up to prepare and distribute food baskets and meal kits to Montreal families in need during Ramadan.
Organizers collected over $600 dollars worth of food and created 24 meal kits to feed 24 families.
Tahsin Kabir is a member of the Muslim Student Association at McGill University.
He said that during Ramadan, it is important to engage in charitable initiatives.
“We have the privilege of having food on the table at the end of the day and at “Suhoor” before we start fasting, but unfortunately, that’s not the case for everyone.”
Kabir went on to further explain how the current economic situation has affected many families in Montreal.
“We see a lot of “Masjid” (mosque) that are very overwhelmed with people coming in for “Iftar” and for “Suhoor,” he said. “So, it is important for us to help the mosques with their work and important for us to fill in some of the gap so that the Masjid don’t have as much people coming in.”
The students spent time on campus organizing the baskets and encouraged others to also give back to the community.
“I think it’s a great initiative to take part in and it is so important to give back to our community and those in need,” said McGill student and volunteer Lyn.
Juveria Suleiman is also a volunteer and student at McGill University.
She thinks that we shouldn’t take anything for granted.
“The things that we were packing today, they’re essentials,” said Suleiman. “They are things like oil and flour and sugar and just realizing that there’s people don’t have that even in Montreal, I feel like that it is something that should push us to take part in it.”
