A woman has been arrested after allegedly harassing Longueuil Mayor Catherine Fournier at municipal council meeting on March 19.

This comes after the city’s decision to deploy certified crossbow hunters to kill a portion of the white-tailed deer population in Michel-Chartrand Parc.

The suspect is a woman is in her 50s, is allegedly not a resident of the city and was arrested on March 20.

According to Longueuil police (SPAL), the suspect committed “acts of criminal harassment” against Fournier.

“These acts were directed against the mayor of Longueuil and concerned the management plan for the white-tailed deer population in Michel-Chartrand Park,” said Longueuil police in a press release.

The woman was released with conditions and could potentially face criminal charges.

Police say this is the fourth case under investigation involving the Longueuil mayor.

“SPAL takes this opportunity to remind everyone to exercise the greatest caution when expressing themselves towards others, whether by post, on social networks, in person, or even on the telephone,” said the police.

After years of procrastination and legal appeals, the City of Longueuil has confirmed that it will proceed to hunt the white-tailed deer in the fall of 2024.

The park is struggling with an increasing number of deer, which threatens the park’s ecological balance.

Between 2017 and 2023, the white-tailed deer population at Michel-Chartrand Park increased from 32 to 117.

Around 100 animals are expected to be culled in 2024.
