‘Funny Women Montreal’: Entirely female comedy show to debut Sunday

“Women deserve stage time,” says Sarah Warren, co-producer and host of “Funny Women Montreal.” The entirely female comedy show is set to debut on April 7 in the city. Pamela Pagano reports.

The first edition of Funny Women Montreal is being hosted in the city on Sunday. Organizers say that the entirely female comedy show aims to provide opportunities for up-and-coming female comedians to hone their craft.

“I think largely, the importance is just normalizing that women deserve stage time,” said Sarah Warren, co-producer and host of Funny Women Montreal.

“Really just highlighting that women have the talent to fill out 30 minutes,” she added. “Women have the desire to fill out 30 minutes, and that you know, we deserve it.”

“I was there this past summer,” explained Warren. “I went to one of the shows and I was like I wonder if Funny Women would do a show in Montreal.”

“The original booker who booked me for my very first set, she was in charge of international operations, so she was pretty much like yes we would love to do that in Montreal.”

The initiative took off –- partnering with local production company Peach Club to make the show come to life on April 7.

“Not only to give the stage,” said Catherine Gagnon, co-Founder of Peach Club. “But give enough stage time so that they can actually develop their special.”

“That’s the ultimate goal for any comedian, right?”
