Montreal’s Olympic Stadium holding competition to recycle roof materials

By News Staff

Professionals around the world are invited to find new and creative ways to recycle the roof at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal.

Designers and architects can propose their ideas that will “breathe new life” into the materials that currently make up the roof.

According to a press release, the roof is made up of various materials.

“It is made up of a variety of materials, including the iconic cables that support it, its two interior and exterior membranes, as well as the hardware that supports the structure,” the Olympic Park (SDMVPO) officials wrote.

It’s a global competition to “collect as many optimal suggestions as possible for the environment, economy and society.”

Once they’ve received all the applications, the Quebec population will vote on their favourite, among the eight ideas that have been pre-selected by a jury of experts.

“This initiative is part of a broader approach to sustainable development and the circular economy, to which could be added the design of an artistic journey made from roofing materials,” said SDMVPO officials. “All of these actions will give a second life to the roof of the Olympic Stadium, for the benefit of the Quebec population.”

The two current membranes (exterior and interior) of the roof represent 42,000m2, which is equivalent to the size of 26 hockey rinks.

The cables total nearly 12km, which is nearly the entirety of Saint-Laurent Blvd., and the roof structure is made up of 434 steel connectors that secure the cables.

The dismantling of the Olympic Stadium roof will begin in the summer of 2024.

Applicants have until May 31, 2024 to register and candidates have until June 11, 2024 to submit their ideas.

The winners of the competition will be offered prizes ranging between $5,000 and $15,000.
